Thousands of Christmas trees are being tagged for recycling to raise funds for Darlington’s St Teresa’s Hospice.
Darlington Rotary Club is busy tagging thousands of real trees on sale at major retailer Croft Trees. The attached tag invites purchasers to donate a small sum for their trees to be collected by Rotary members and friends, which are then chipped into valuable biomass fuel.
Darlington Rotary organiser David Hayward said: ‘We have 20 borrowed vans and have 70 volunteers ready to recycle probably about 2,000 trees.
‘This should generate around £17,000 for St. Teresa’s at a time when funds are very tight.’
Hospice Chief Executive Nicola Myers said: ‘This is one of our major fundraising campaigns and we really appreciate the help of both the Rotary and Croft Trees, plus the generosity of local people.
‘Every year we have to raise over two thirds of our £4 million running costs to continue offering palliative care and support free to more than 1,000 local residents.’
The tree tagging is an annual Rotary/St Teresa’s event and has raised tens of thousands of pounds for St Teresa’s over the years.
